Apple introduces new iPad and iPad Pro with speed improvements

Both versions will have updated CPUs, and the normal iPad will be the first iPad to include a front-facing camera on its landscape edge.

Tuesday, Apple Inc. discreetly unveiled updates to two of its iPad models without the same excitement as the company's recent iPhone 14 launch.

Via contrast to how it revealed the iPhone improvements, Apple AAPL, +0.94% chose to debut the upgraded iPad tablets in a series of press releases. With the addition of its speedier M2 processor, the firm is improving its iPad Pro while simultaneously bringing speed improvements to its new entry-level iPad.

The new iPad Pro's M2 processor appears to be the largest improvement. According to Apple, the processor's central processing unit (CPU) is up to 15% quicker than that of the previous-generation M1 chip, and its graphics processing unit (GPU) can deliver graphics performance that is up to 35% faster.

Power users, including "photographers processing enormous picture collections and designers manipulating complicated 3D objects," would benefit from the processor, according to Apple.

The Apple Pencil can be detected up to 12 millimeters above the screen using the iPad Pro's "hover" feature, which allows users to see their mark before touching the screen to draw or write.

The starting prices for the Wi-Fi and cellular versions of the 11-inch iPad Pro are $799 and $999, respectively, while the starting prices for the Wi-Fi and cellular versions of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro are $1,099 and $1,299, respectively.

Apple also made updates to its standard iPad model, shifting the front-facing camera this time to the device's edge in landscape orientation, which the company claims is a first for any of its iPads.

Users will always be gazing directly into the camera, whether they are on a FaceTime conversation or making a video for social media, according to Apple. The 12-megapixel sensor on the camera has a 122-degree field of view.

The next base-level iPad will have Apple's A14 Bionic technology, which the firm claims will increase CPU and graphics performance. Additionally, Apple is relocating the Touch ID reader to the iPad's top button.

The smartphone will be available in the colors blue, pink, yellow, and silver. Starting prices for the versions with Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity are $449 and $599, respectively.

Both of the updated versions are presently available for presale; delivery will start on October 26.

The enhancements are being made as Apple attempts to boost iPad sales once more. The gadget gained popularity during the epidemic as people looked for new technology that would let them to work and study from home, but now it's more difficult to maintain momentum: Apple reported iPad revenue of $7.22 billion in its June quarter, down from $7.37 billion a year earlier.

On Tuesday, the business updated its 4K Apple TV as well, giving it a performance boost with the A15 Bionic chip that, according to the company, will speed up games.
