In the 1980s, the Stasi employed Ludger (David Kross, Balloon GFF19, The Keeper GFF19) to infiltrate the counterculture scene in East Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood, which was home to revolutionaries, artists, and bohemians. Ludger finds himself leading two lives—one as an underground poet and the other as a Stasi agent—after falling in love with the enigmatic Nathalie and having an affair with his first victim, Corinna.
Years later, Ludger is faced with the risk that his hidden Stasi history may be revealed. When he obtains his file, his wife Corinna sabotages his attempt to read in silence about who had been spying on him in the GDR. Everyone peruses the impressively hefty file during a surprise family gathering, up until a written love letter to Ludger is discovered by Corinna.
